1987年2月26日から28日、マイアミで、第1回アメリカ大陸におけるアフリカン・コミュニティ会議が催された。この本は会議のプロシーディング。

会議のテーマは「アメリカ大陸におけるネグリチュード、エスニシティ、アフロ系文化」。

主催者はカルロス・ムーア（フロリダ国際大学）で、会議はエメ・セゼールに捧げられている。

Part Iは「Negritude, or the essence of black awareness」というタイトル。
